Healthcare Reform $$ Cha Ching. Cha Ching. Cha Ching. $$

I'm going to write this post while my feelings are still raw.  Healthcare Reform is such a hot topic right now. How do we pay for these health insurance premiums? How do we cover these rising costs? How in the world can we all get quality care? I mean... isn't that what everyone wants? Quality care? That is why many who have great health insurance advocate not to redistribute the insurance and many who do not have advocate to redistribute health care? 


Here is the question I posed in class the other day.  IF we know there is no "endless supply" of money and we have to choose who gets what resources... how do you make those hard choices?

What if there is a 90 year old man and a 10 year old boy who both need a heart? Who gets it? Easy...
What if there is a 70 year old man and a 25 year old man who both need a heart? Who gets it? easy...
What if there is a 60 year old man and a 35 year old man who both need a heart?  Who gets it? hmmm..easy...
What if there is a 50 year old man and a 40 year old man who both need a heart? Who gets it? hmmmm....

Things are not always black and white.

Thank you....

What about the person who will never contribute to his health care? How much has Alexander "cost the state?" How much of your money has gone to keep him alive?
How much do you think it costs?
Genetic Testing. Seizure medicine. Reflux Medicine. Specialists. Early Intervention Services. Standers. Walkers. Feeding Pumps. Airway machine. Heart Monitor. 14 days in the NICU. 2 Helicopter rides. 4 Ambulance visits. 1 full time nursing care while we are gone. Mickey Buttons. Feeding Supplies. Endocrineologists. Neurologists. Immunologists. Doses of Ativan. Doses of Phenobarbital. Doses, doses, doses. Millions.  We are already in the Millions. ALREADY in the MILLIONS.

Thank you. From our family to yours. From your family to ours.  I'm not sure what all the answers are, and... truth be told - Ray and I have decent health insurance - so we are blessed in that respect.  But I do know this. Alexander will continue to drain the Health Insurance pool.  He will continue to need things. Prayers and supplies.  And we will continue to be grateful that someone who will never contribute can receive.  As I lay here with my son.... who had 9 seizures yesterday.  Who needed medicine after medicine. Who is alive and will smile at me tomorrow.... I say thank you - for the both of us.

P.S. For those of you who wonder what a mother does the night they return from the hospital after 9 seizures.....If you are me - you beg your mom to stop and buy you a top of the line video monitor so you can sleep in your own bed. Then decide to do this "just to be safe."
