My Darling Graduate....

Congratulations. I want to delete that ... because it sounds so aloof. It is like buying a candle for someone you love. The generic gift. The generic phrase. Because you mean so much more to me and this means so much more to you. I'm writing this on the eve of your prom. Which I didn't make it to. Even though I wanted to.

Instead, I saw pictures of you. And you looked Beautiful.  You are Beautiful.  I can't believe this is it......

If I say you were a little awkward, will you be insulted?  You were a tween ... with hair issues, and clothing issues, and friend issues, and boy issues.  And then - to top it off ... you had a sister who was always compared to me.  So, I decided I should make it more equitable.  You and I began to have special time.

Do you remember when you used to come over and we would go shopping for hours?  Do you remember when we would go shopping for prom dresses years ago?  You and your sister were too small to actually fit into them, but we tried anyway.  Do you remember when we used to have fashion shows? And discovered a love of all clothes awesome.  Life was simple then - no husband or kids for me, and lots of fun stories to hear from you.  Do you remember that you used to have "your own room" at my house?  Do you know how important you were for me?
Do you remember being in my wedding?
Do you know how excited I was to have those special dresses made for you and your sister?  

Did you know how thrilled I was that the "powers that be" that put you in my classroom for your high school years? Or how insanely happy it made me that you decided to take my class? Do you know how hard it has been to hold my tongue so you will not hear about my mistakes? How proud I am that your list of mistakes is so much shorter?  You might make mistakes, but that is part of growing up. Without mistakes, learning from them is hard.

When you leave for college - please know that I am beyond proud of you.  The person that you are is so amazing.
I love you. I'm proud of you. 
Did you know I kept this?

 
Make memories. Make mistakes. Learn to see me with adult eyes (flaws and all).  And I will learn to see you as an adult.  Welcome to the world my darling graduate.

She is one of my cousins. She is awesome... even though she shoved a pie in my face today (at a team building day ... and the $$ goes toward Autism) ... :)
