My Kids Call Me Big Mouth....

From the Smurfs.  It was seriously my favorite cartoon as a child.  It was the only cartoon my father watched.  I remember on Saturday mornings, he would come inside and if the Smurfs were on … he would sit and watch them with us.  We didn’t have cable – we only had 4 channels.  This isn’t a “back in my day” blog, but we didn’t have access to cartoons 24/7 and Saturday mornings were golden because it meant cartoon heaven.


So back to the Smurfs.  Those little blue people were my favorite.  And – I know – people have all sorts of weird issues with Smurfette and her band of men, but as a child – I saw none of that.  I saw them as happy and fun and conquering evil.  They were amazing!  I even have a Smurf pillow and a Smurf TV tray.  I took a bin when I moved out – of my favorite childhood memories… both of these items made it into the box.

I found a DVD of Smurf tales at Target and was so excited to bring it home and share it with my kids.  We did the “Let’s watch the Smurfs,” chant.  We all sat down as a family to enjoy a bit of my childhood and get rid of Caillou or Fireman Sam. 

You know what? The Smurfs are scary!   I mean really scary.  Here is an example of the episode found on our DVD.  If you watch for less than 5 minutes, you will see exactly what I’m talking about. 



And – the entire episodes are based around magic.  I’m not opposed to magic – I love Harry Potter, but just take a look at how society has changed! There is no way I let my kids watch the episode linked above, but even the other episodes are pretty darn scary.  With my adult eyes, I am not in love with the Smurfs.  I actually looked online to see other commentaries about the Smurfs, and there is a ton of stuff out there about Smurfs being communists, dark magic, and anti-Semitic.  Then, there are just as many articles praising the Smurfs as just 1980’s fun.  I’m not totally sold on either; however, I can agree that society has changed in the last 30 years.  The parent in me is not a big fan of the message or images on the Smurfs.

But, now my kids are.  Andrew and Addison are completely into the pretending to be other people.  Right after watching the Smurfs, they pretend to be Papa Smurf and Smurfette.  In response, I said to my kids, “Big Mouth want egg!” – which is a line from the Smurf episode.  Guess what?  They now call me Big Mouth.  Which my husband thinks is hilarious.

Oh, I loved the smurfs when I was little! Saturday mornings at 8:00...I would actually wake up early on the weekends to watch them. I must have had a hundred of those little people lining my bookshelves, too. However, I had forgotten what the shows were like; you are right-- things have changed. Just like I would feel uncomfortable if Ryan decided to play 'cops with guns' and started 'shooting the bad guys'...even though I did just that with my brother as a little girl without second thought...attitudes are definitely different than they were in the early 80's. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
