Relay - Together and Alone

Our family walked in the relay for life last weekend in a small town close by.  My beautiful Aunt has touched our lives with her journey to hear the words, "cancer free."

Friday night was so fun... spending time with family members late into the evening hours.  We took the twins for the walk during the opening ceremony.  It was very powerful (the twins were... well, good for 2 1/2 year old twins.) Afterward, the little kids got dropped off at home with Ray, and my cousin (sister to darling graduate) and I headed back down for late night fun.  We ended up arriving in time for the luminary service.  It was fairly emotional.  If you ever have the opportunity to see the luminary lighting service at Relay for Life, I would encourage all of you to go. 

I was a bit overwhelmed with emotions... but three stood out. 

Emotion 1.... Extreme Sadness... so many candles lit.  So many lives affected by cancer.....

Emotion 2.... Hopefulness... so many candles lit. So much money raised. Such a large strong community to support each other.

Emotion 3.... Isolation... If you gathered all the people in the world that had Wolf Hirschhorn Syndrome (or were seriously affected by it) - they would have been at that ceremony.  The idea that more people were at this small town Relay for Life candle lighting than have Wolf Hirschhorn Syndrome in the world reminded me of how rare we really are.  Very isolating.

Saturday it rained.  Like I said before, in PA - it rains.  And those rain waters were just what this family needed to wash away the emotion of the night before.

Guess who loves the Rain? The puddles? Yup.. my kids.

I have always wanted to participate in a Relay, and something always comes up on that weekend. I lost my wonderful Gramma and my aunt to cancer and I hate that disease.

I can only imagine the isolation that you must feel at times. I admit, I had never heard of Wolf Hirschhorn until I tripped over your blog - and now not only have I heard of it, but I'm learning about it too as I read more of what you write. I admire your strength so much!

But then again, you're a PA girl - of course you're strong! :) They raise us tough out there!
